what to do with heavily shaded areas in back yard
An important aspect of my job is helping customers decide which type of grass to buy. In one case or twice a week I have to deliver the disappointing news that a client's yard is besides shady for the lush, green lawn they have been dreaming well-nigh. Inevitably the client gives me sad puppy dog eyes and asks the post-obit: What Tin I do?
Read on to learn my solutions to your shady problems.
How much shade is "Likewise Much"?
As a living plant, grass needs sunlight, water, and healthy soil with nutrients. In order to thrive, each variety of grass has its own requirements for minimum corporeality of straight lord's day per 24-hour interval.
The terms direct and filtered are important to sympathise:
- Direct sunlight – the sun shines straight on the grass with nothing obstructing its path.
- Filtered or dappled sunlight – sunlight passes through branches or leaves of trees, other plants, or structures before it reaches the grass. Pine shade is a type of shade that some grasses abound well under; plus it'south "high shade," meaning the branches are high so that sunlight hits the lawn in the early or subsequently parts of the day.
Fescue is the most shade-tolerant turfgrass in our region. Information technology needs a minimum of iii-4 hours of straight, non filtered, sunlight per day.
The warm flavor grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede) crave even more direct sun ranging from iv to 8 hours.
| Lawn Type | Minimum Hours of Direct Sunlight Needed |
| Zeon Zoysia* | 4-5 hours |
| TifTuf Bermuda* | five-6 hours |
| TifBlair Centipede* | 6-7 hours |
| Zenith Zoysia | 6-seven hours |
| Tifway Bermuda | viii+ hours |
*Tolerant of high pino filtered shade, as long is it does get direct sunlight too. Site conditions will vary profoundly, so yous may have to conform your landscaping if at that place isn't enough sunlight.
Nosotros recommend you use our turfgrass selection filter to assist you select the right blazon of lawn for your shade conditions and other criteria.
Tall Fescue requires the to the lowest degree amount of sunlight of the grasses we abound, but it does require 3-4 hours of direct sunlight. This gardener uses Tall Fescue in the open area, but under the tree awning she'south planting Hostas and other shade loving plants, along with using mulch to define this shaded area.

This panorama of a Zoysia lawn shows that the area on the left is too shady, thus the lawn is thin and there are bare spots as the shade gets denser; while the bulk of the backyard (eye and right) gets enough sun to grow into a plush carpet of grass. The thin area should exist replaced by extending the mulch and planting more than monkey grass. Photo by Hillary Thompson.
What tin can I do if I really want grass?
That depends entirely on the reason for the shade. Sometimes a tree can be removed, or branches trimmed to drag the tree canopy and allow more direct sun to angle in during the morning and late afternoon.
These changes may increase the corporeality of direct sun plenty to make grass an option. But sometimes there is only no fashion to become adequate lite to the area and other solutions must be employed.

The answer varies depending on the topography, size of the space, your budget, and time you accept available to devote to gardening. Your ground cover options include:
- mulch
- gravel
- hardscaping (paths, fountains, ponds, fire pits, decorative stone)
- plants
- or some combination of these things.
You will demand to determine how yous wish to use the space. For entertaining, hardscaping is a good option. If information technology is for recreation, mulch is the best mode to go. Just planting the area will do a meliorate job of soil retention, and drifts of basis cover plants are really beautiful.
I recommend consulting a professional person mural designer start to avert costly mistakes.
